 "Great Cargo Bags!" 2009-06-15

Heavy duty bags that will work great with any cargo carrier. I use them with a Yakima rooftop carrier. Used for recent trip with one for each passenger. Made loading and unloading rooftop carrier a breeze. They are worth the cost.

"Great protection for your gear and clothes" 2009-03-10
By John (PHOENIX, AZ USA)
These are well constructed and functional bags.

I had these on roof of my SUV, unprotected (no tarp or roof box), while driving for two hours in an intense rainstorm. While some water did get in the bags I was surprised how well they protected the contents. I was sure that the clothes inside were going to be soaked when we arrived, but there was only some dampness in certain areas. I think the water came in through the zippers.

They come with nice straps and also have handles on the top and on the side.

The picture implies that you get 4 different colors. However, I receive 2 blacks, a green and a yellow so I assume that the colors shipped are random, or they were packaged incorrectly.

They seem pricey but when you consider that you are getting 4 well-made bags the price seems somewhat reasonable.

The bags are good size, well built, and good looking. The way they fold up for storage is well designed. I hope to get many years of use out of them. I would recommed this product.

By bsb-rochmn (Rochester, MN)
I don't own much luggage, so we bought these to go in our Thule 603 Ascent 1500. Though expensive, they fit perfectly in the box and the non-slip bottom keeps them in place. Worth the money for utilizing the packing space.

"As advertised... an excellent choice for the Thule luggage carrier" 2008-12-01
By klepdog (columbus, ohio)
Sturdy, roomy, and they all fit perfect in my Thule luggage carrier. I looked around various stores for similar bags, and they were all $25-$40. So getting 4 of these for a little over $100 is a good deal, especially when you consider they fit perfectly into the Thule luggage carrier without any guesswork. They are built from the same stuff they make tents out of, and they have the feel of durability to them. They also have a slip-resistant bottom so there is no movement from the bags when driving.

"Hard to install-Far too easy to steal...." 2009-07-20
By bunnyrabbit4 (New Orleans, LA USA)
After having spent about 5 hours trying to finish putting this devil together I decided to stop and write this review.

Pros: It is pretty. It would be prettier if I could get the rubber strips to stay on, but after an hour of trying everything from sliding them to tucking them to hitting them with a rubber hammer, they continue to pop right out. The suggestion of just plugging the groove with duct tape is sounding better and better.

Cons: As someone else commented, it is SOOOO easy to steal. You might as well give $500 to a good charity and avoid supporting the theifs drug habit!! It comes off very easily and the locks only lock the uprights to the supports.

As noted by someone else, on my Tacoma, you can't use the lower position. I also had the problem someone else had of not being able to make the uprights vertical, causing the top rail to bow. I cured this by pitching the directions and puting the thing together on the ground with all bolts loose. I then lifted it on to the truck with the adapters hanging and made everything finger tight before grabbing my wrench. I then went bolt to bolt tightening each by only a few turns.

Since the other person who reported the above problem didn't have a Toyota I would assume that all the adapters pull the rack supports inward toward the bed so that they don't sit completely on top the bed rail. Tightening down too hard on the adapters can easily tilt the supports sidways unless the top bar is on. If you attempt to put it on with the adapters too tight, you get the bow.

Thule should have made the track on the Xsporter wider and provided a wider tongue with a longer neck on the adapter to allow it to sit fully on the top rail.

Note that the Toyota adapters you have to buy are less than the HALF the size of the sturdy looking ones that come with the rack. I struggled to get mine on for nearly an hour before I figured out that one of the adapters had its hole drilled at an angle. Make sure you test all the bolts in your adapters before trying to install to assure there are no defects.

I now have to wait for Thule to send me a replacement adapter, but that is not the worst of my problems. I travel frequently to the city and this rack is so easy to steal I fear leaving it at a rural boat launch much less an urban parking lot. All I can figure to do is cable lock it to my bed loops and hope no one has the tool needed to remove them.

 "Great Rack!!!" 2009-04-07
By Kenneth Childs Jr. (Summerville, SC)
I bought the xsporter 422 for my 07 Tundra D-cab. I carry extension ladders, etc. on it with no problems and lower it during the weekends when not in use. A lot better looking than the weekender I had before, especially when there wasn't a ladder on there. If everyone would use the rubber inserts in the rails that are provided, there would be no whistling!! I bought my rack used so it didn't come with enough rubber stripping so I called Thule and had two 72" strips shipped for about 15 bucks! I marked on the rack where the bolts to the crossbar were, inserted the strip with the bolts in place, cutting a hole for the bolts to come through and mounting it to the uprights for a firmer fit and to make sure there was no rail exposer for the wind to catch. After putting the load stops where I wanted them, I cut the remaining strips to fill in the rest of the rail. Absolutely no whistling!!! I get a lot of attention with this rack. And it works great too. K.C.

 "Whistling Thule 421" 2007-10-21
By J. Donahue (Red Sox Nation)
If you have a 05+ Tacoma you should look for a different rack , TracRac is good choice. This rack will NOT go to the full lowered position with the shape of the Tacomas bed. Also if your using this for contractor needs and you add the "Load Stops" this rack will whistle like crazy! SO ANNOYING!! People will here you coming from miles away. Thule really dropped the ball on the R/D on this one.

 "Thule 421 Rack" 2007-09-24
By surf's up (RI)
I purchased this rack for my 2007 Toyota Tacoma double cab/short bed with the associated adapters. The Thule site said that it would fit my truck. Well, it fit but not as I thought it would. Because of the shape of my truck bed an the position of the wheel wells, the rack only functions in the higher position. IE, I cannot position the rack into its lower position (which was one of the selling points and why I purchased the rack in the first place).

Thule has a great concept in this rack but I give them poor marks for not fully researching its capabilities/usefulness on different truckbeds. If I am wrong and Thule did try the rack on different trucks, I am very surprised and dissapointed that their website still says it would fit my brand and year of truck.

This cargo rack looks awesome on our silver Ford Ranger. It looks sleek when not in use and is perfect for our needs.

The problem I had was that they shipped an incomplete box and the return label they sent after sending out a new one was inconvient to carry to the post office instead of UPS pickup up as was delivered. Thank goodness we had the rack!

 "Excellent Product" 2009-08-20
By L. Bertone (Seattle)
The Thule 571 Roof Mount Box Storage Lift is built well and works flawlessly. Read instructions carefully as the precise dimensioning must be followed. There is a little margin, but as an example, the inserts provided are for a cement/concrete application. I found that using large(50 lb) capacity sheet rock anchors, used to hang heavy pictures, worked very well. You can find them at any hardware store. Also prior to starting the installation, layout where your vehicle will be when mounting the roof box, then mark the ceiling with the boxes overall dimensions. This will help when installing the storage lift.

 "overall - good product" 2008-11-18
By claydj (USA)
Overall, good product. The pulleys and winching mechanism are well-constructed. The instructions I thought are very deficient. Be sure you think through your position before drilling holes. The screws they give you are concrete screws - not sure how many of us have concrete garage roofs.

 "Works great, but..." 2008-09-23
By Senor Hotcell (California Bay Area)
After getting this hoist installed on my garage ceiling, I've been happy with its performance. Happy enough, in fact, to buy and install a second one. But it was quite the frustrating experience installing it. My garage has a very high ceiling and is completely finished off so that the overhead studs were difficult to find. The first hoist took me about 5 hours to install. The second one took about half as long, since by then I knew what I was doing and knew where to find the studs. Overall, it's a good product and works well, but allow plenty of time for installation. One last comment: I'm still not sure why this gizmo costs over $100 because it is basically a very simple device and should probably run about $60.

 "Works as advertised" 2008-05-25
By Nathaniel T. Pond (Cincinnati, Ohio United States)
This works like it's supposed to. Holds my 1800 without issue. A few notes though:

1) Get your own mounting screws, the stuff that comes with it is junk

2) I ended up putting up 1x4 supports and mounting everything to those. I didn't put the middle support in, and it doesn't seem to matter.

3) My ceiling is is just over 10' tall, and this only comes down to about eye-level for me (I'm 6' tall). It's enough for me, but you might consider getting a longer rope.

 "So Far So Good" 2009-05-26
By G. Gooding (Raleigh, NC USA)
Bought this cargo bag instead of a hard cased carrier, really for price and for storage options. We also only need something like this once or twice a year on family trips.

We just used it for the first time (3hr trip to the beach). I've got a 2002 Pathfinder with a stock roof rack.

* Simple to install, everything fit fine.

* Comes with a storage bag when not in use thats about 2.5 ft by 3 ft.

* My vehicle drove perfectly, no extra noise and I didn't know that we were toting something on top. I had to remember before heading into the drivethru so I wouldn't bust it off.

* I didn't try to pack it full on this first use, but we were able to get a baby stroller in there (a big travel system thing, not an umbrella stroller). I also put in a regular sized roller-board bag, along with a couple of other smaller bags that I could contort a bit.

* Only took 20 minutes to open box and get up, and now it will probably take 5 going forward.

Great product so far, if something starts to fail I will repost.

"Reliable, Good Option for Soft Carrier" 2009-03-29
By A. Gish (Georgia to California)
I used this to travel 2700 miles from Atlanta to San Francisco and it was worthwhile carrier. It is pretty spacious and fit lots stuff for a soft carrier (15 cubic feet). Most soft carriers are smaller and more flimsy. This is a tough piece but totally light and portable. Its made of thick canvas covered by thick plastic covers/flaps for water protection. It also has a lot of padding. Per a friends suggestion, I put a few rubber kitchen drawer liners between the carrier and my roof to protect my roof in case it moved but it did not. It rained on part of the trip and my stuff was safe.

It can be put on by one person and fits to all racks. I have a vibe hatch back and many of the hard top carriers do not fit on my car because the roof rack is short compared to SUVS. This could easily fit from an SUV or a small car

If you are looking for a soft carrier that is tough this is a good option.

 "Very pleased" 2009-01-10
By juan bobo (New York via Texas)
I did about 1200 miles with this bag on top of my Vibe. Plenty of room for the dogs in the car and plenty of room for our stuff in the bag on top. I'm truly amazed by how much this thing holds.

I didn't hit any rain, but it did fine when I took it to a coin operated car wash to blast off a thick layer of West Texas dust.

BTW: the zipper should close at the back not the front.

Here's some pics of my rig:

"Perfect for the college move." 2008-09-15
By College-Selection-Crazed Mom (Pittsburgh, PA United States)
We purchased this softsided cartop carrier to basically to hold one daughter's college-bound belongings so we could load the trunk with the second daughter's things. The Thule worked perfectly. We were amazed at how much it held, but we did limit its load to soft things such as clothing and bedding. Heavier and more sensitive items (computers, printers) went into the trunk for safety. We made the drive from Western PA to Alabama without a problem. When we spent the night before move-in in a hotel, we simply detached the Thule from the top of the car and carried it into our hotel room like a great big duffel bag. And it was so nice that when the daughters were safely delivered, the carrier simply folded up and stowed in the trunk for future use.

"Great bag for a great price - made a coast to coast trip!" 2008-09-15
By J. Schermerhorn
This bag doesn't look like much, although it is pretty sturdy and worth the price. We drove from Virginia Beach to Temecula, California with this bag on the top of our 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it far exceeded our expectations. I had intended to buy a hard luggage roof container, but this was far cheaper. It held its shape perfectly and protected its cargo. I later realized I had overloaded the bag by about 50-75 pounds, but you wouldn't know - the bag held together fine. We took about two weeks to drive from coast to coast, logging numerous miles on side trips and stops - we usually left the bag on the roof but in a few locations took it off for security - it was minimal effort to remove (about 5 mins) then replace the next morning. It is also important to note that we did find inclement weather (hard rain) going through South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana. I was worried because I had left some important documents in the suit case on the roof, but no worries - there was not even condensation in the roof bag! Bottom line - well worth the cost, very durable, easy to install and remove, protects against the elements. Only suggestion - include more straps 4 was not enough - we bought 2 32" bungie cables to ensure the load didn't shift.

 "Nice Bag!!" 2009-09-12
By Christal Bussenger (Bangor, PA USA)
I like this bag very much, however, I thought weather resistant meant rain would not penetrate the cargo bag. That is exactly what happened to us. It wasn't the end of the world, but did cause a little headache having to dry things out. We had to put things in gargage bags the second time we used it, just in case of an unexpected rain shower. I like the fact that it stores easily and it is very roomy. It eliminated us putting items all around our children and making them uncomfortable for the six hour drive. Huge bonus!! I would recommend this for people who can't store those big, bulky roof top carriers.

Open the packagae and the thing has two tears along the seam. of course our road trip was the next day, so we used it and Amazon (which is incredible!) sent us a new one in exchange for when we got back.

In addition, it happened to rain one evening and our topper soaked thru.

For the money, Id skip it and save up for a hard shell topper instead.

While we like the idea of this soft Cargo van (for easy on and off), after a few hours of driving in the rain, eveything was SOAKED from my babies pack and play and stroller to golf shoes. Not sure that i would take on another trip unless the sun was going to shine for sure.

 "Great in a pinch " 2008-08-06
By M. Miller (Sewell, NJ USA)
I literally made this purchase while on vacation. We traveled 250 miles with the car fully loaded. Passengers were cramped. Many cars passed us having some kind of cargo device on their roof. We all were comparing different types along the way. So, I went online to compare prices and shipping. Just about everyone was at the same price point, but Amazon killed the competition with only 15.00 for 2 day shipping. It arrived in plenty of time and when we left to go home, the car had some room. The product is well made and with 13CF of space, it was a blessing. Storage at home was a breeze as well. I folded it back up, put it into the carrying case and hung it from a hook in the garage.

 "Great car rooftop cargo" 2008-08-03
By Richard A. Leipold (Carnegie, PA USA)
We needed some extra storage space for vacation this year, so we considered a rooftop cargo bag. I wanted something that was not heavy or clumsy, inexpensive and could attach to the side roof bars on my SUV. The Thule Bag seemed to fit my needs so I bought one and tried it. I was impressed. It was easy to pack and was easy to attach to the roof, but you should have another person to help you get it tied down tightly. It took a lot of highway miles without any flapping noises or need for adjustment. When unpacked, it folds nicely into its own travel pack for storage. Excellent product!

 "Great product" 2009-08-19
By R. Beaman (Denver, CO USA)
I purchased the Nomad Cargo Bag for a camping trip and it performed fantastically.

it carried all of our camp chairs and collapsible table, along with our sleeping and clothes bags for a weekend in the mountains of Colorado. Was durable-no splits or tears and we had about 90-100 lbs in it. Carry handles were invaluable and included tie straps worked great also. If it were 6-8" longer this would be 6 stars, but our fly rods wouldn't fit.

"Unreliable construction that quickly fails" 2009-01-04
By C. Stephans
My first 856 Nomad practically disintegrated during the first trip. The replacement bag has begun the same process after two 11-hour trips on the interstate. The inside liner is cracking and rips are begining in the outer liner. I have been careful not to exceed the 100 lbs. limit or to overstuff it. In hard rain, the first bag did not resist water at all.

The ease of use makes this an appealing product, but I have determined it would be better to pay more for a hard cover carrier. The material of this product is not suitable for highway driving, especially if it rains.

 "Disappointing - failed in 200 miles" 2008-06-20
By William M. Murray (Central Indiana USA)
I had seen some negative reviews on the soft type cargo carrier but figured with a name like Thule it was worth buying. First time used, a wooden child safety barrier gate (with no sharp edges, and no stretching of the bag to accomodate it) had worn a 6 inch hole thru the rear of the bag in less than 200 miles travel. The only other things being carried were a couple of foam "boogie boards" and several beach toys and floats.

I wouldn't use this bag for anything more than soft clothing - the material is not as robust as winter jacket shell cloth - and nothing like the ballistic nylon that suitcases are made of.

Update: Thule wouldn't honor their "lifetime" warranty (product less than 2 months old) which was disappointing but Amazon gave me a full refund. Happy I purchased through Amazon.

"Good for the money and ease of storage" 2008-04-28
By S. Rose
Bought this for Spring Break run from Indiana to Florida. It held up extremely well and without leaks. Although we didn't test it with too much rain. It held 4 large duffle bags and a medium suitcase along with other things stuffed around. The closure seemed well done and the hold down straps were strong.

My only complaint is that it seemed to be missing 2 attaching straps from the bag to the car. It had 2 for attachment to the front of the bag to the front bar. But only 2 others, although there were places for 4 more attachments. I would have felt better with 2 additional straps. But nothing moved.

I did notice quite a bit more wind noise, but that is to be expected. The best part is that it is now in a pack about the size of a large dictionary. I WAS thinking about a hard case, and for as little as I will use it, I believe this was certainly the correct choice. I had a hard shell case one time, and although it was great to use, it was a pain the othere 99% of the time it was packed away.

I wouldn't go smaller than this one...
