 "Super High foot, very BAD idea" 2009-10-22

My rating is based on the design of the "Super High" 953 foot only, I imagine the "low" and perhaps even the "high" would be just fine. The build quality was absolutely top notch, and assembly/installation was very easy.



What is a problem is putting this long of a "lever" on to something so fragile as a rain gutter (and I have very strong rain gutters). There is simply no way to do this safely and effectively. After doing a little searching it seems most folks who buy these go an average of 6-12 months before damage to their vehicle occurs from the forces applied by such a high foot design with such a narrow base. I would not trust it to carry a package of toilet paper. Thule should have known better, they should NEVER have made the "Super High" version of these feet.

This is a great cargo net. I have two of them. One of them is about three or four years old, is used frequently, and has still retained its strength and "stretchiness". I really like the oversized hooks. I have an FJ Cruiser and I can attach them to the thick support (vertical) bars that are on the factory roof rack.



There are nets out there that are cheaper and if you only intend to use this occassionaly, those might be options. However, if you want something well-made, functional, and durable, this it the way to go.

I have a Honda CR-V with a roof rack, and we used this net to tie down bags, folding chairs, and some fishing poles for multi-day trip. Once we figured out how to reasonably attach the net to the roof rack, it worked well. Unfortunately, getting the net attached was a learning process. You couldn't just hook it on, but had to pass it underneath the rack rails, and hook it from the inside.

When searching for a rooftop rack system to fit on my 2003 Honda CRV, I didn't seem to have too many options. The factory rack was overpriced and not very flexible as there weren't many attachments for it to handle the various types of things I wanted to carry...bikes, canoes, kayaks. I decided to buy the Thule system because of it's great reputation and variety of fittings available for it.



I love my Thule rack. The quality and fit of the foot pack is just amazing. Installation was a breeze and the included plastic covers match the existing roof line nearly perfectly. Once the feet are clicked in place, they are very solid and feel incredibly secure...that's something reassuring when carrying a $3,000 kayak! I would hate to see my kayak flying off my roof at 65mph.



It would be nice if locks were included in the package instead of being an expensive option, but other than that, this is a quality rack system that you cannot go wrong with. Highly recommended.

I bought the 579XT to carry my 17" Grumman Aluminum canoe. These do exactly what they are supposed to do. The padded mounts are easily adjusted on the bars to fit your canoe snugly. The included load straps and bow and stern lines are of good quality nylon with equally excellent ratchets and covered buckles.



Best thing is that these carriers are versatile... they helped me carry plywood, tables and a mattress on top of my car. Thule makes a great system and the Canoe Roof Carrier is one great part of that system.

Great product. It's easy to install (most can be done on the couch without going outside), and it greatly reduces wind noise - it's as if there was no roof rack on your car. Lastly, it looks cool.



I was also hoping for an improvement in gas mileage, but it's bitter winter and I use a lot of heating and drive on snow tires, so I can't tell if it helps or not.

Be warned that if you have a 2004-2007 style Toyota Prius, this is a nightmare to install. There are multiple steps that simply are impossible to perform without improvising. Unless you are extremely handy or can have this professionally installed, I would avoid this for a Prius. I did finally get mine successfully installed, but it took 3 days and lots of problem solving when the steps in the instructions were either unclear or physically impossible. What a nightmare.

I just installed the Thule 400XT rack -- the original estimate of half an hour though was greatly off the mark. It took me about 2 and a half hours to install the first time. However, one I learned from my mistakes, it was a lot easier to install.

The general difficulty I had was very fine tolerance the parts have in attaching them to my '01 Prius. For example, I had to load bars initially upside down (grip side down) which made a big difference in trying to do the initial lock with the tensioning cam (still required a lot of force though). Also, there was little extra leeway on the screws to attach the fit kit to the feet. Lastly, setting the final tabs in place took a while until I realized I could just get a plastic card and push them in while shutting the assembly. After all these hickups, I know how to set it up a lot faster. Othewise, solid construction and it doesn't look like it will move anytime soon.

It does NOT fit! Thule will not stand behind their products and let me return the kit. I have another Honda and the kit for that one fits great. So, try and find a review of the specific kit you want to buy before you buy it. Do NOT buy the 2171 kit expecting it to fit a 2006 Honda Civic. IT DOES NOT FIT.

I have the 400xt Aero Foot, LB65 Square Load Bars, 2119 Fit Kit and locks on my 2007 Toyota Matrix XR (on the car 1 mo after purchase 6/2006) and love it. I was a little taken a back by the price, but you get what you pay for. I wanted something stable, when it is on my car, I don't want it to come off. I didn't want to realize my stuff was gone and come back 100 miles later and find it on the road.



We had one of Thule's racks on our 77 VW Van in the late 70s-80s. We moved from Alaska to WV with that rack on our car. Some place in CO we got stuck in a blizzard and the wind was so strong our car was rocking up on two wheels. The rack and our stuff stayed on strong. I knew when it was time for a rack on my car Thule was the way to go. Sure it's expensive, but you get what you pay for.

This is a pretty straightforward purchase: two Thule-brand bars of dimension 1.25" x 0.75" -- exactly what I needed to replace my old (ancient!) Terzo-brand bars that finally rusted out and gave way. Only 3 stars are awarded as I found the picture misleading: the end caps are NOT included, I'll have to buy these separately now. Had I known (or read the written description which omits mention of the caps) I would have sprung the extra $5 to get the caps included in my free shipping.
