"Solid Rack but Damages Bikes" 2009-09-03
By Dan Weaver (charlotte)
This is a solid, durable bike rack and the swing feature is great. Every major component of the rack is excellent and up to the Thule standard - EXCEPT ONE. The anti-sway component is a poorly engineered, cheap, piece of junk that will damage your bike. I have three bicycles that carry scars from the antisway accessory. Unfortunately you need the antisway so that your bikes do not rock and bang into each other on the rack. I strongly suggest that you never strap a carbon frame bike to the anti-sway. At the point(s) where the bike frame touches the antisway I have a brand new Cervelo P3 that has a dime sized area with no paint on it. My road bike, TT bike and my son's aluminum frame road bike all have scars from this rack.

I cant afford a new rack so I've glued felt to all points on the rack that touch the bike frame. This looks terrible but it is protecting my bicycles. You can also use an old inner tube as a protective sleeve over your frame. It's a shame that Thule ruined an otherwise excellent rack with such a poorly thought out anti-sway device. I guess the idea is to save $2 at the risk of damaging a bicycle frame that costs $'000s.

If you take good care of your bikes, I would look for another option. If you dont mind the missing paint, it's a solid rack.

 "Buy This Rack!" 2009-08-30
By COBiker (Denver)
I spent a lot of time researching various brands and styles of bike racks. I settled on a hitch mount rack since loading three bikes on top of my Toyota Highlander would be a chore for me, and for my wife, impossible. I finally bit the bullet and spent $400 at REI for the rack.

This is a very solid and heavy rack. It weighs about fifty lbs. Construction is excellent. It is easy to assemble. There are two pivot points on the swing arm which allow the rack to move out of the way of the vehicle tail gate. I put light layer of wheel bearing grease on these before installation, though the manual did not call for it. The pins look like they might have a teflon coating, however, the grease will help repel water in the future. Everything moves easily with a full load of bikes. I also applied thread locking compound to the nuts on the pins, they have plastic lock washers on the nuts, however, road vibration can eventually work these loose (I used to be an automotive engineer, btw.) The nuts and bolts are 19 mm, using a socket wrench and a box wrench during installation will be much easier than the wrenches supplied with the rack.

Loading the bikes is simple. Thule also provides four very effective anti-sway brackets to keep the bikes from rocking. A nylon strap comes with the rack as a final measure to secure everything. The rack comes with an integrated locking cable for the bikes which tucks neatly into the frame. As another reviewer mentioned, this will probably slow down a thief not prevent one who is intent on stealing your bikes so you may want to invest in a Kryptonite lock and cable.

The rack mounts to 2" hitch receiver. Make sure your car has a 2" hitch or an adapter before buying this rack. Now here's the tricky part: the rack is bolted into the hitch. The bolt goes through the hitch and threads into the rack. It is very easy to improperly align the bolt and the threads, thus ruining the bolt/threads. I almost did this. Just be careful lining everything up. The bolt should thread with little resistance. If the bolts is in slightly and you are having trouble tightening it, take it out and check to make sure the threads are not boogered up.

Do not underestimated the convenience of a swing out rack! This is worth the extra $100 to $150 you pay for this rack. The first time you leave something in the back of your car you will be glad you have this feature. Enjoy.

"Best rack I have bought" 2009-08-18
By J. Escasan Leal (San Diego, CA)
We just did a long trip to Utah on the family mini-van and this rack was perfect, traveling with kids was very convenient to be able to open the mini van back door without needing to unmount the bikes. The only issue, as with all racks other than roof racks, is that the bikes can scratch a lot , I removed one of the bike supports to convert it in a 3 bikes rack instead of 4 bikes. That way i was able to protect better the bikes, doing this I avoided the bikes touching each other. I have a rav4 with roof racks but I just ordered a hitch for it to use this rack as well on it, this way now I can carry 6 bikes securely on my car on group weekends rides and enjoy friends even on the ride to the trail and load gear on the back of the car without dismounting bikes every stop to pick up a rider

 "User Review: Thule 964 Revolver 4-Bike Strap/Hitch Carrier" 2009-07-11
By JWO (California)
I purchased this item from Amazon retailer, Rack Attack. PROS: 1) After using this item on a recent camping trip and a 10-day vacation, I wouldn't even consider a bike carrier that didn't swing-out and provide access to the rear hatch of my SUV. I used the swing-out feature numerous times during both those trips and while loading/unloading vehicle., 2) IMPORTANT! The swing-out feature also allowed me to store and secure my bikes conveniently on the carrier when not in use. Indispensible during the overnight and for those daylong sightseeing trips., 3) When not in use, the rack's fold-down feature is both functionally and aesthetically pleasing., 4) Well designed. CONS: 1) Price. However, the swing-out feature definitely justifys the extra cost. Amazon's competative pricing, no-sales-tax and free shipping sealed the deal and softened the blow. A definite "feel good" moment during these troubled economic times. 2)The built-in Thule cable lock alone is no match for a pair of bolt cutters. I ramped up the security with two Kryptonite Cables and three Kyryptonite U-Locks securing the bikes' wheels AND frames to the carrier's hitch post. Although time consuming and tedious, my bikes were still on the carrier every time I walked out to my vehicle., 2) Bulky. The carrier may require a dedicated space of its own in the garage. In conclusion, this item is well designed and a must-have for those who enjoy traveling with their bicycles. For those who don't...the Thule 964 Revolver 4-Bike Strap/Hitch Carrier might just change your mind.

Bike rack is very user-friendly. I love that we can open the back of the vehicle while bikes are attached...huge plus! Much more convenient than a roof rack. Highly recommend it. It's worth the price.

"Best value & feature hitch bike rack" 2009-08-18
By JK
If you are looking for a hitch bike rack, this is the one to get.

It's very sturdy for a folding-featured hitch rack, meaning the arms fold down and the entire rack folds out for easy trunk access. It's heavy, but it's only because it's pretty much all steel. Again very sturdy, and anything lighter and as sturdy would cost a lot more (like the Thule's helium models). The two folding joints are very solid, and feels like they won't move once they're "clicked" into place (down or up).

It comes with locks for the rack and the bikes themselves, which are accessible with the same key (very convenient). You cannot lock the bikes in place without the key, so you'll won't forget your lock key. The rack also comes with the anti-sway straps, which works exceptionally well.

If you are to buy all those separately from Thule, you'll pay much more than the Ridgeline. Even comparing other brand/models, it made sense to buy the ridgeline model.

Other's have noted that the bike locks can come off and drag. Well, unless the locks break off, which is highly unlikely, they will not drag. When there's no bike loaded on the rack, and the arms fold down, the bike locks "can" drag off. But if you're that worried, just pull them out and lock them in place, and you're done.

I've read from another review that the hitch lock is a joke, and can easily be broken off with a hammer or something like that. Well, that's absolutely true. But unless you weld your rack to the hitch, there will always be a way for a willing person to brake a lock. Any $20 bolt cutter will cut most chains & locks, and any any $20 portable drill will drill through the toughest key pad lock, etc, etc etc. My point is, the Thule lock system is as good as any bike rack will get, and it's very convenient.

If I had to, I can complain about the fact that the paint on the rack can easily scratch, especially on the 2 folding joints. So if you have moisture on the scratched area, expect some rust. However any can lubricant will cause any further serious rust damage. Also, since it is a folding rack (and has joints), the rack will bounce from front to back, and may be side to side a little bit. That's normal, and if you have more bikes on the rack it will bounce more. It may appear to be loose, but it's not. If you don't believe me, just mount the rack, and jump a little on the rack joint. The entire car will bounce before the joint gives.

Finally, it says Sweden everywhere, but it's made in USA. Gotta love that one.

Again, I could not find a better value and set of features than this one, and I've looked at several others at nearby stores. Hope it works out for you.

"Good Overall....but some basic design flaws...!" 2009-07-27
By T. L. Allred (Los Angeles, CA)
This is a sturdy and functional hitch mount bike rack but I have found some really basic design flaws that causes me to rate this product with only 3 Stars.

** the 2 inch (combo) hitch mount is very sloppy in the receiver of my factory 2007 Yukon XL. The rack sways and bounces around like its about to fall off my truck. Very poor fit on the 1-1/4 inch / 2 inch combo hitch mount.

** the hitch pin is under sized for a 2 inch hitch mount. Sure the pin threads are sized correctly, but the portion of the pin that extends through the pin hole to the lock is undersized and adds considerably to loose rack fit and sway. The pin is also too long and allows the pin threads to back out unless tightened down with a wrench. Luckily, the pin lock keeps the pin from completely falling out and allowing my 4 bikes to crash on the pavement at 70 mph!

How could Thule make such basic fitting errors after building a good, a heavy duty bike rack that is otherwise well engineered?

 "Solid, functional rack" 2009-06-22
By RJL (Texas)
This rack works perfectly on our RV. It folds down easily when not in use. We were able to put two adult and two kid bikes on the rack with no trouble. The hitch bolt locks on, and there is a security cable hidden in one of the tubes. You just pull it out and lock your bikes. Great feature! Very sturdy and convenient. Highly recommended!

 "Buy the Roadway" 2009-05-03
By Jordan M. Berkley (Cary, NC USA)
Buy the Roadway, it's the exact same rack sans the hitchlock, No Sway Cages, and the built-in securty lock. These extras are not worth the money so buy the basic rack. Here's the deal:

1. Sure, you can secure the hitch pin (mediocre anyway). But, you can remove the upright by loosening two nuts and removing the two bolts.

2. The No Sway cages appear to work. But, you'll need to strap the front wheel down or it will bound around. So, use a synch strap through the wheels and the hitch, and no more sway! Even with the No Sway cages, you'll have to do this.

3. The integrated lock is kind of nice. But, it's not really long enough to go through the front wheel. So, if you want to secure your front wheel, you'll need another cable lock anyway. So, just buy a cable lock that can go through the wheels, frame, and hitch and your golden.

Save your money.

"My Bikes Fell Off and Dragged Down the Highway" 2009-06-06
By C. Bush
Do NOT trust the rubber straps to hold your bike on! I had 2 bikes both on the front of the rack as I was supposed to. I strapped them in very tight and put the blue cable around them for extra security. Plus, I had a bike lock wrapped around both of the frames. I wasn't on the highway for 10 minutes when one of the bikes popped off. Luckily it was strapped tightly to both the rack and the other bike so it dragged behind my car until I could get off the highway. I'm in the process of making a warranty claim to Thule so they can fix the damages to my bike. So far their claim rep has been nice but doesn't seem to think that they're going to pay for anything. My only shot is that there is a small fray in one of the rubber straps.

Overall, I actually really like the rack. The lesson that I learned is that I need to use lots of extra straps to make sure the bikes can't move AT ALL. Also, I wouldn't recommend using this rack with a car, even if you have a hitch. The weight of the bikes pushes the shocks down so the bikes bounce around a lot more.

 "Good Bike Rack" 2009-05-17
By K. Seitz
This rack works as advertised although with some (ladies) bikes it's a tight fit getting the bike frame on the rubber mountings. It was easy to install. The rack mounts far enough away from the car that on a Lexus SUV, you can still open the rear hatch without tilting the bike rack. Also, if you need a tailer hitch, take a look at U-Haul. They have custom hitches for many cars that simply bolt on (without having to remove anything from the car). Much cheaper than what local repair shops quoted to adapt a generic hitch.

 "Beautiful Product" 2009-04-18

Great product as advertised. My only disappointment is that you can't use a standard hitch pin or lock. This means you have to take it off when not in use and want to make sure it does not get stolen.

Great product. However when usually I receive stuff from Amazon, they always arrive in perfect condition. Not this one, it was pretty scratched up and almost looked like used. Since this is heavy and lot of effort to return, decided to keep it.

 "Excellent buy!" 2008-10-19
By A. Buban (Bryan, TX)
I was unsure if this would work on my vehicle but it attached to the receiver hitch perfectly and works great. I have a Suzuki Grand Vitara and even though I cannot open the back door all the way I can open it about half way and still have access to the back of my vehicle. Bikes load easily and ride great. I haven't taken it off the back because of the ease of getting in and out with the ease of dropping the bike rack down. The only thing is that you do have to take the bike(s) off before you can do that.

Shipping was fast and well packaged. The bike rack itself was solid construction but doesn't weigh too much where I would need my husband to de/re-install. It secures tight to my hitch and holds the bikes well. I like how the mounting arm and the hitch arms fold down or away. Great buy... especially for the price.

 "recreation family" 2009-06-26
By Sean Adams (ny)
this rack works very well and fits my family of fours needs . the positives are the rack is very strong and sturdy holds 4 bikes easily .. putting it together was very easy . When its together its a bit heavy and bulky, but my wife is able to move it around ,very simple to use for most people.. the so called negative -as stated in a previous review if you don't want to use the threaded bolt with a wrench to tighten into the receiver hitch then you have to drill out the threads in the base of the rack which takes a bit of energy and patience but no problem for anyone who is familiar with power tools .The biggest negative to me was my daughters bikes which is more bmx style (12inch)does'nt fit in rack due to spacing in the bars on the bike my sons bike 16inch bmx style takes some thinking to figure out how to get it on the rack but it does fit took me about 15 minutes of flipping and turn till i found the right angle above and below the racks bars. i don't think any rack out there took this into consideration for this but i don't really know though

There's still room to pop open the back window (only) without tilting the feature down. Compared to similar types as well as other brands...I couldn't pass it up! Such a great deal!
