"Thule new design Helium 970." 2009-08-09
By Vladimir Raykin (San Jose, CA)
I purchased Thule Helium 970 in July of 2009. I like the bike carrier because it is light and very convenient for every day use.

I just unsure about the rack anti - theft protection. You can't lock the receiver pin like on previous Thule models. And in locked position the Thule Stinger Swinger hitch knob will spin freely but you could easy release the hitch rotating the tighten bolt using a fine plumbing pliers at the open bolt space next to the knob.

I think the stinger assembly needs better anti - theft protection or Thule should design a lockable receiver pin for the model.

 "lock jammed" 2009-07-17
By A. castle (weston, fl)
It's a niece product, light and easy to operate. My lock jammed when i was on the road and I was unable to use my bikes. Called Customer service and the only advise the guy gave me, was to find a locksmith or cut the "security cable". Then he requested to send pictures of the broken cable so he can ship a replacement one. I ended up disassembling the carrier and taken apart the cable when I got home.

Other than that, I'll recommend the Helium carrier even the support pads ended up scratching the bike's frames.

"everything i was looking for" 2009-04-13
By T. Wertz (Petaluma, CA)
Easy install; took minutes to adjust and rack my bike. Bought for a '08 Tacoma short bed and had no problems with it becoming loose when I took it on the highway. It holds my bike securely and tight. The rack has a turn-key lock system that prevents anyone from twisting it off your truck bed and running away with it when you're out riding. The fork blocks you mount your bike on allow any type of cable lock to pass through them and give you the extra security. The fork blocks do not lock so I recommend buying a good cable lock.

 "Thule Bedrider 822" 2009-01-06
By Goofy Jessie
The Thule bedrider 822 has worked well for me. I drive a Honda Ridgeline and the bedrider was a good match for it. I have been able to transport up to two bicycles (A Giant and a Raleigh)with no problems. Of course, I further secure them with tie downs (peace of mind). As far as the delivery was concerned, The Bike Rack delivered as promised and on a timely manner. Shopping through Amazon is the only way buy things these days for me.

"Great Product and easy to install" 2008-06-09
By S. Smith (Virginia Beach, VA)
This was almost exactly what I was looking for in a bike rack for my pickup truck. No drilling. It is held in place by tension and rubber pads. I drove about 700 miles with two bikes on it without any issues. The only thing I would like to see is a way to actually lock the bikes to the rack. If I could have done that I would have given this a 5 star rating.

 "Great Bike Rack" 2009-08-18
By Dew (Denver, CO)
At first I was a little leery spending so much money on a bike rack. I'm amazed at how easy it is to use. It literally takes seconds to pop your bike on the rack and lock it down for travel. I've had the rack 2 months now and I'm glad that I bought it. I would buy another one in a heartbeat and would recommend it to friends. It was easy to mount. Don't forget to buy the locking hitch pin which is sold separately.

 "Nice Rack" 2009-04-28
By E. Young Jr. (NH)
Debated on what style rack and decided that this was the best option for me. Being a mt. biker this was my choice for the ease of transporting. Mt bikes have all sorts of frame designs and shock placements. Buddy has a roof rack and seemed more of a pain than I wanted. Researched and decided on this. Putting it together wasn't bad. Not difficult to remove from the car. A little heavy but easier than my Thule Speedway. Another reason is the 2 bike add on which I also purchased. Works great. Also bought the locks to protect my investment. Real happy with everything.

"Best bike rack on the market by far." 2009-04-16
By Ricardo Aguilar-chavez (Fresno, CA)
I own a 2008 Santa Cruz Nomad and 2005 Jamis Dakar XLT 1.0. If anyone is familiar with these bikes they would recognize the frame design and know that any other type of rack system would simply not work. I previously had tried a Yakima and it just didn't cut it for me. The Thule 916 T2 system is excellent, very well built and easy to load your bikes. I highly recommend as the best bike rack out in the market today. Very well worth the price.

 "Durable, easy-to-use rack" 2008-12-26
By C. Kennedy (Norman, OK)
We have owned this rack for about two years now and it is amazingly easy to use. The rack isn't light, so expect to work a bit to get it onto your hitch, but once on, it is very convenient. If you have a rear hatch, you can fold the rack down and get things out of the back without removing your bikes (not that it would be hard to take them off and put them back on, putting both bikes on the rack takes about two minutes at the most.

 "Thule Rack exceeds expectations" 2009-09-14
By William L. Foster (Mystic, CT)
The rack arrived within a week of ordering. Assembly took less than 5 minutes and was simple to do. Rack fits 2" receiver perfectly. A bolt is screwed into one of the receiver holes to fasten the rack. Finger tight would probably do but I take a 3/4" wrench to snug it up. It comes with a strap that keeps the bikes firmly fastened to the rack. Rubber hold-downs work well and can be adjusted to fit most bikes. Rack is lightweight and easy to insert into receiver as well as remove. Although rack can be lowered via a hinge to allow hatchbacks to open, you are advised to not do it with bikes attached. All-in-all, a rugged, lightweight, simple rack that gives you confidence that your bikes will arrive when you do without damage.

"Thule 2-bike hitch mount rack" 2009-08-28
By A. William Ceglia
The "bolt in" hitch is a bit more inconvenient than a pin. If you want to lock it, you must order a special locking bolt. Bolt-in provides a little more stability, however. I keep a ratchet wrench in my truck now. The rubber or neoprene fasteners slide inward on the support bars for the outside mounted bike during transport. Although it has happened with each use, it has not caused a problem, yet. Its okay, it gets the job done.

 "Great Rack, Sturdy" 2009-08-19

This bike rack worked perfectly for us. My husband loves his bike and put a lot of extras into it. I was surprised that he approved of this rack and had no complaints. We have taken our 2 bikes on it several times for approximately 150 miles each time. We priced around as well and the value was very good.

 "Thule Bike Hitch" 2009-04-03
By William Cavanaugh
I found the Thule bike hitch very easy to assemble and use. The only draw back is that I wish they had made it easier to collapse and store when it's not on the car. Also instead of a bold holding it to the receiver hitch a pass through pin would have been nice so the hitch could be locked to the car.

 "Horrible rack" 2008-09-29
By E. Younan (Detroit area, MI)
This is a terrible rack. It does not hold the bikes on securely as the straps are weak. I've have several scary highway moments. Plus, it does not separate the bikes and scratches and dings your bikes. It is poorly designed. Additionally, you have to buy a locking hitch pin to make it secure. Do not buy it unless you want to ruin your bikes.

"Works, but scratched my bike" 2009-01-31
By K. MCHALE (Pasadena, CA United States)
Well-built rack that fits well on my car (although not using the setting that the manual suggested). I used this to transport my Cannondale road bike across the country. Unfortunately, the plastic piece that straps onto the downtube to keep the bike from swaying put some serious scratches in my bike's paint, wearing it all the way to the shiny aluminum below. Pretty disappointing. If you use this rack, I suggest putting a small towel, like a washcloth, between the downtube and the stabilizer piece.

 "Gets me from A to B" 2008-05-17
By Kellie M. Pearce
Took me about 20-30 mins. to figure out how this thing went on my Corolla. It got my bike home from the store which was about 6 miles from there I live but I was terrified that the rack was going to fall off if I hit a big bump b/c it only clips onto the trunk. I guess all are made like this but I'm not sure, I always thought the straps wrapped entirely around the trunk and went through the inside. I also had to purchase a bar at the bike shop to get my bike on the rack b/c the women's frame will not fit on the rack without that bar - $34.00 I was not expecting to spend. :-(

 "Excellent Product" 2009-08-31
By Keith Smedema (Indianapolis)
I was originally looking for a bike rack for a 1.25" hitch on Craigslist, but I couldn't find anything I liked. After reading the reviews on the Thule 912 I broke down and paid full price for it. I've been very happy with it. There's virtually no sway in the rack, and the fold down arms mean you can leave the rack on your car even when you're not transporting a bike. It was very easy to assemble.

My only complaint is that Thule separately sells a locking mechanism to secure the bike rack to your receiver which should be included as a standard accessory. The rack bolts to the receiver so it does require a wrench for a thief to remove the rack from the car, but the lock would add an additional level of security.

"Outstanding, solid, easy to install" 2009-08-17
By A. Davis (Philadelphia, PA USA)
I got this rack when I got a new (small) SUV, and the old trunk-mounted bike rack wasn't compatible. We wanted something a lot sturdier anyway, and this is definitely it. I have complete confidence in the Thule brand -- we didn't even consider another. And this particular rack is the one that works well for us. It's easy to install and remove, and it's very easy to mount your bikes. A couple of well-placed levers make it easy to fold the rack section down when not in use and to slant the whole device back (without the bikes mounted) so you can open the hatch of the SUV. (You can buy longer hitches that keep the bikes farther away from the back of the vehicle if you have a larger SUV.) This is a solid piece of equipment. I did two hours of highway driving with the bikes secured to the rack -- they didn't move! No wobbling, no wheel spinning -- nada! I feel very secure with this rack, and of course, love the fact that we don't have to deal with the inconvenience of a roof rack.

Bear in mind that you need to have a trailer hitch. And if you're going to be leaving your bikes unattended for any length of time, I would definitely recommend locks for the bikes AND for the rack. It's so easy to remove the rack, that a thief could very easily take it and the bikes with very little effort.

"Easy to use -- slight damage in shipping" 2009-04-08
By Gatorhawg (Florida)
Easy to put together and very versatile. One of the clips to lower the bike arm was busted during the shipping, which PO'ed me since I just paid big bucks. Delivery came in original box and should have been repackaged or boxed in another box. Otherwise, I would have given 5 stars.

 "Very good" 2008-09-10
By Alarmed Mutant (USA)
This bike rack is a very good buy. It's very stable and is built solid. The rubber straps that hold the bike down don't seem cheap and seem like they will last for a while. The rubber that the bike sits on is soft and wont scratch your paint.

The bikes sway when you drive and the front wheel turns. To counter that there is a cinch strap that comes with it and I strap the crank to the rack and then take the excess and tie the front wheel off and stick the excess in the trunk door. I took an old inner tube and wrapped it around the vertical part of the rack so the pedal doesn't scratch the paint.

 "Pretty Good" 2008-08-27
By J. Phillips (upper, IL)
2 bike version mounted to a 2002 Focus ZX3 in a 1 1/4" hitch. Works well enough to transport my bikes without having to remove any wheels. The lower folding portion does make hatch opening easier. I chose the Roadway for the folding top portion. This great when the rack is on your car but no bike is being carried, it folds down improving clearance and doesn't look as funky. The receiver post is on the long side for my car but the designed length is probably that way for more universal fitment. I swear a car behind me at a stop light is going to run into the up-post someday. As much as I don't like reflective stuff, some 3M reflective tape on the lower end of the up-post might be a good idea. The included strap works fine but I opted for the Thule plastic sway cages. The strap is being used to keep the front wheel form moving side to side. The Thule snug tight 2 lock works well.

I suggest using anti-seize on whatever bolt/locking pin you use to install this. Also make sure you use some sort of lube on the receiver tube and post to prevent corrosion which could lock the rack into the receiver.

Best bike item I've bought yet......besides my bike.

By J. McNeil (Covington, LA)
This bike rack was easy to install (see y-tube video on 'how-to' offset spare tire), no straps flying, secure (locks), stable, bike tires do not extend more a few inches of view (from each side mirror), does not block rear view. I am a female rider, Trek 800-size bike fits great on this rack. Installed this spare tire mount bike rack on a Honda CRV (2006), with offset spare tire - bike is centered on the rear of vehicle, no problem. Great solution to transport bike! Very happy with the added biking adventures -away from home.

By D. B. Kopelov (South Florida)
We just got our first chance to use the bike carrier and it is a quality product. The bikes stayed put and arrived in great condition. I followed the advice of a previous reviewer who stated that the first bike on should have the front wheel to the side that the spare tire favors. With our Honda CRV, the spare is to the right of center and that is the side for the front bike tire. I would also recommend you use the fabric strap included to secure bicycles. Bungie cords with coated hooks will also work.

"Very nice bike rack for Jeep" 2009-07-02
By K. Podkonjak (Denver, CO)
I have a Jeep Wrangler and this fit REALLY nicely and took me very little time/detail to install. Always make sure you strap the bike onto the wheel/rack with either the provided or other straps before leaving or it will 'wander' to the back of the rack in high speeds...but it never came off. Worth every penny and beats those 'strap-on' varieties.
